The separate organizations, IGOs and NGOs alike, have impacted the well being of the Great Barrier Reef alone, but the combined forces of IGOs and NGOs alike have also proven to be very effective. The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) is a partnership among governments, international organizations, and non-government organizations that strives to preserve coral reefs, the most notable being the Great Barrier, and related ecosystems.
The ICRI was originally initiated by the governments of Australia, France, Japan, Jamaica, the Philippines, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Additional partners from governments, United Nations organizations, multilateral development banks, environmental and developmental NGOs have subsequently joined the original founders and are currently collaborating in the International Coral Reef Initiative. The initiative contributes to raising awareness on the importance of and threats to coral reefs and related ecosystems, recognizing that they are facing serious pressure.
This is still an issue that is being discussed and debated to this day, as the Great Barrier Reef is still very much in need of conservation and reconstruction. Many of the organizations discussed and issues raised are of recent, the earliest information gathered had typically been recorded merely five years ago. The conservation of the Great Barrier Reef is still very much an issue, and will continue to be one until the plans put into place reach their planned improvements.
